Winter 2016 Newsletter

TO:                  ADOPT-AN-AREA-IN-TIVERTON PARTICIPANTS

FROM:            THE CONSERVATION COMMISSION LITTER CONTROL COMMITTEE

COMMITTEE NEWS

This Winter 2016 Newsletter is sent with our best wishes and thanks to all ADOPT participants for your ongoing contribution to Tiverton and to our environment.  As you know, serious discussions continue re:  the possibility of major changes in our Town, and should this happen, major changes certainly, in patterns of littering.  Since its establishment, the Litter Committee has been a subcommittee of the Tiverton Conservation Commission.  Because of evolving and important responsibilities, the Town Council will consider a proposal to establish an official Tiverton Litter Control Committee.  We will keep you informed as this process moves forward.

It’s possible that this official Committee will consider increasing its membership. Please give some thought to Committee membership as the above process evolves.  Your ADOPT-AN-AREA membership will continue as usual.

A related note:  Current Litter Control Committee meetings take place at the Tiverton Library on the first Tuesday from September to June at 6:30 p.m.  No regular meetings are held in January, July, and August.  ADOPT participants are welcome to attend—contact Committee Chairperson Vicki Revier (See contact information below) as needed.

CAPTAIN PATRICK JONES

Capt. Patrick Jones, Police Department liaison to the Committee, attended the October 6 and November 3, 2015, meetings.  Since enforcement of the Litter Ordinance (Article VI, Chapter 38, Environment) is vital to our work, his comments were significant.

  • Close attention to the Litter Ordinance and related fines

  • Addition of a link for the Litter Committee Website to the Police Department Website and vice-versa

  • The creation of a Committee formal logo for various displays.

  • Sharing of helpful information re:  keeping both State and Town roads litter-free (continues to be problematic—see 12-5-15 Sakonnet Times letter to editor re:  roadside litter)

YOUR ADOPT CLEANUP AREA

Please be sure to monitor your area on a regular basis and clean up as needed.  If there are problematic businesses, we encourage you to speak with the proprietor—you do so as an official representative of the Town.  Bags are available at the Tiverton Library and should be dropped off at the DPW. Should you need assistance, the Committee will be pleased to help (contact information at end of this Newsletter).

RELATED ITEMS

Adding new members to our ADOPT group is always of considerable interest.  Information on this is available in a 3-ring binder near the Information Desk, Tiverton Library.  IF you see someone picking up litter around town, please ask them if they are on our ADOPT List as our mission to have every roadway adopted in our town.  IF the person picking up litter isn’t on the ADOPT List, please have them contact Vicki Revier if they want to be added to the list. (See contact information below.)

Through early fall 2015, Clean Ocean Access hosted 60 clean-up events during which 1,289 volunteers removed 12,633 pounds of marine debris.

CURRENT WINTER ROADWAYS

Before the recent snowfall, there was considerable litter along many Tiverton roadways—hidden until late fall in the tall grasses which are seldom trimmed currently (budget concerns, etc.)—especially on State roads.  Please be especially involved in checking on your ADOPT area and cleaning up as needed.  Special problems or need help?  (See contact information below.)

TIVERTON CLEAN-UP WEEK

Tiverton Clean-up week will take place April 30-May 7, 2016.  The kick-off will take place on Saturday, April 30th at Grinnell’s Beach at 9am.  Bags will be provided. Please bring your own gloves.  This event is sponsored by the Tiverton Garden Club.  Contact Diane Sunderland at gigisunderland@gmail.com for further information.

Good luck with your important effort to keep our town litter free!
